Ngorongoro Crater

Where is Ngorongoro Crater?

The Ngorongoro Crater is located in the south-east part of the Serengeti ecosystem, within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It lies approximately 180 kilometers west of Arusha, a city in northern Tanzania. It’s the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crater floor is about 260 square kilometers, with walls reaching up to 600 meters in height.

The crater is a self-contained ecosystem with a wide variety of habitats, including grasslands, swamps, forests, and a central soda lake filled by the Munge River. This diversity of environments supports an incredible range of wildlife.

It’s one of the few places in Africa where you have a good chance of seeing the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and the endangered black rhinoceros) in one day.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority manages it with a focus on conserving the area’s natural resources and promoting sustainable tourism.
