Rubondo Island National Park

Rubondo Island National Park is a unique and remote national park located on an island in Lake Victoria in northwestern Tanzania, about 150 km west of Mwanza. Established in 1977, it is the only island national park in the country and is known for its untouched wilderness and rich biodiversity. The park is mainly covered by dense tropical forest, wetlands, and lakeshore habitats, creating a rare ecosystem different from traditional savannah parks. It is home to a variety of wildlife including elephants, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, bushbuck, and the famous introduced chimpanzees that now live freely in the wild. With over 400 bird species, Rubondo is also a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy forest walks, boat safaris on Lake Victoria, fishing, and peaceful nature experiences in a truly secluded environment. Rubondo Island National Park is ideal for travelers seeking a quiet, off-the-beaten-path safari surrounded by pristine nature and island wilderness.
